Sempre malata. Talvolta letale. E' l'aria che respirano milioni di italiani nelle maggiori città della Penisola. Ancora oggi, dopo anni di allarmi e di multe imposte dalle autorità europee, in Italia di inquinamento ci si continua ad ammalare e a morire. Questa è la fotografia scattata da EpiAir-Inquinamento atmosferico e salute: sorveglianza epidemiologica e interventi di prevenzione, pubbliccato sulla rivista Epidemiologia&Prevenzione, uno studio sugli effetti a breve termine degli inquinanti atmosferici (PM10, NO2 e ozono) rilevati nel periodo 2001-2005 in 10 città italiane: Torino, Milano, Mestre-Venezia, Bologna, Firenze, Pisa, Roma, Taranto, Palermo e Cagliari.
Il controllo sulla salute dei cittadini a livello nazionale - Promosso dal Centro nazionale per la prevenzione e il controllo delle malattie - è un organismo di coordinamento tra il Ministero del lavoro e le Regioni - e coordinato da Francesco Forastiere del Dipartimento di epidemiologia del Servizio sanitario regionale della Regione Lazio, il Progetto EpiAir è frutto della collaborazione scientifica di diversi ricercatori italiani nel quadro di progetti promossi a livello nazionale (ma non solo), nonché dell'esperienza maturata dai servizi sanitari e dalle agenzie regionali per l'ambiente (Arpa) incaricate di sorvegliare lo stato di salute della popolazione e lo stato dell'ambiente.Popolazione sottoposta a tossici ambientali - Che cosa è emerso dallo studio? "Che la popolazione italiana continua a essere esposta a tossici ambientali - risponde Forastiere - e che l'inquinamento atmosferico urbano, in gran parte originato dal traffico veicolare, si conferma ancora oggi come un problema ambientale di assoluta rilevanza per la salute pubblica nelle città italiane".Le città più a rischio - Infatti, nel periodo 2001-2005 si sono rilevati livelli di particolato (PM10), di biossido di azoto (NO2) e di ozono (O3) molto preoccupanti: PM10 - in diverse città, e cioé nell'area di Mestre (Venezia), a Milano, Torino, Bologna e Taranto, è stato costantemente al di sopra della soglia di 40 mg/m3 (il limite annuale previsto dalla normativa vigente); NO2 - a Milano, Torino, Bologna, Firenze, Roma e Palermo i valori sono stati sempre superiori a 40 ìg/m3 (limite previsto dalla normativa vigente, dal primo gennaio 2010); O3 - in molte città, e in modo variabile per anno, le concentrazioni risultano sostanzialmente elevate rispetto agli standard di qualità dell'aria OMS (100 mg/m3) con una forte influenza esercitata dalle condizioni meteoclimatiche (per esempio, i picchi registrati nell'estate 2003).Aumento delle morti - Questi livelli di inquinamento si riflettono sulla salute dei cittadini: "Gli effetti più gravi sono quelli che si manifestano in un aumento delle morti".
In una città come Milano, dove muoiono in media 10.000 persone l'anno per cause naturali e dove la concentrazione media annuale di PM10 nell'aria supera di 20 mg/m3 il limite imposto dalla normativa, in un anno sono almeno 140 le morti riconducibili al persistente superamento della soglia.Malattie cardiache e respiratorie - Morti che nella maggioranza dei casi avvengono per cause cardiache e respiratorie.
Un prezzo caro, pagato soprattutto dagli anziani, risultati i più suscettibili agli effetti deleteri del particolato". "Naturalmente, le conseguenze dell'inquinamento non si esauriscono in un aumento delle morti, ma si manifestano anche con l'incremento dei ricoveri in ospedale", sottolinea Forastiere.
